Frequently asked questions when renting a driving lesson car

Learning to drive with a Cambio shared-use car, how does it work?
Thanks to the cooperation between VAB Driving School and Cambio, you can use a shared-use car to learn to drive. So renting the car also works via the normal Cambio system. You make a reservation and pick up the car at the chosen location at the chosen time. You open the car with your Cambio card. You then find the key in the car itself. Once you have registered, Cambio will give you full details of how the car works and will also send you your Cambio card.
How do I register?
You can easily register for the rental lesson car by filling in the online registration form above the FAQ section on this page and uploading the necessary documents. A Cambio employee will then contact you to process your application further and guide you through the Cambio system.
What documents do I need to register?

To complete your registration, you need to upload 3 files:

• Copy of your identity card

• Copy of your provisional driving licence (18M or 36M)

• Certificate of competence if you took 20h driving lessons

How much does it cost to use a shared-use car?

The car costs €16.50 per hour when used between 7 am and 11 pm. This includes fuel, insurance, breakdown assistance, maintenance, etc. Upon registration, you pay a one-off entry fee of €35 and a €250 finance charge (deposit), which is refunded afterwards. Each month, you will receive a statement of your driven hours payable via direct debit. This also makes you a member of Cambio and, once you have your final driving licence, you can continue to enjoy Cambio’s shared-use cars.

What are the conditions for using a shared-use car?
Since you will be driving a recent car, we ask that you have at least mastered the basics and have had at least six hours of driving lessons. You must be able to produce the certificate of lessons taken, that’s all! Have you previously taken lessons with another driving school? They are also valid.
Can I always rent the car?
In principle, you can always reserve cars. Do this in a timely fashion, so you can be sure to have a car available at the desired time. Please note: it is forbidden to drive on public roads with a provisional driving licence on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, the night before a public holiday and the night of the public holiday itself, each time from 10 pm to 6 am. So it is your own responsibility to observe this correctly.
Do I need to provide my own L-sticker and additional rear-view mirror?
All cars are provided with an L-sign on the rear window and an extra rear-view mirror for the coach. Unfortunately, we note that these items occasionally disappear. To be on the safe side, it is therefore best to provide an extra mirror and L-sign yourself when using one of the cars. You can buy these in our webshop.
I have a provisional driving licence for 18 months and can practise without a coach. Can I rent the car?
Yes, if you have taken at least 20 hours of driving lessons and received your certificate of competence, you can rent the car to gain driving experience. Of course, we recommend always practising with an experienced driver in the passenger seat anyway.
Can I take the test with a shared-use car?
Yes, you may take your test with the rental lesson car. Be sure to send an email to cambio@vlaanderen.be stating customer number and the reserved car and date. That way, Cambio’s technicians can do an extra check on the car, so you are 100% test-ready. Always book the car well in advance and make sure you have enough time to take the test and return to the original location. Also, be sure to check before you leave that all on-board documents are still present in the car.
May I drive abroad?
A provisional driving licence does not allow you to drive abroad, including with these cars.
Does the car have dual controls?
As the car is available to rent, even for regular Cambio users, there is no extra set of pedals provided for the coach. So it is a normal car.
Is an automatic car also available?
No, currently all rental lesson cars have manual transmission.
What equipment is in the cars?

• L-sticker (Please note: we recommend that you also bring your own)

• Fuel card + explanation of how to use it

• On-board documents: insurance papers, registration certificate, certificate of conformity

• Accident statement

• Contact info Cambio

• 2 hi-vis vests in the boot

• Fire extinguisher

What type of car will I be driving?
You will be driving a Citroën C3 5d/5p passenger car. More info on the car can be found here.
What happens in case of damage?

The cars are omnium insured. If you yourself are at fault in an accident, the excess is as much as €1,000. Cambio also informs you of the procedure to follow after an accident.
